Make sure you are prepared for your project
Project Tools Checklist
Do you have everything to prepare the surface?
Proper surface prep is key to a lasting finish—whether you're painting drywall, staining wood, or coating cabinets. Make sure you have sandpaper or sanding sponges for wood, a cleaning solution or degreaser for walls, and filler or spackle for patching imperfections. A smooth, clean surface helps coatings stick better and look more professional.
Do you have the right tape and masking tools?
Clean lines start with good masking. Grab painter’s tape, plastic or paper masking film, and possibly a dispenser to speed up prep. Protect floors, trim, and hardware before you start coating.
Are you using the right brush, roller, or sprayer?
Different projects need different tools. For walls, you'll want quality rollers and frames. For trim or detail work, have angled brushes on hand. For large or fine-finish jobs, a sprayer might save time and improve your results.
Do you have the right sanding tools for between coats?
For smooth topcoats or wood finishes, a quick sand between coats can make all the difference. Keep fine-grit sanding pads or sponges ready—especially when working with stains, clears, or cabinet-grade finishes.
Do you have tools for cleanup and maintenance?
Stay organized and extend tool life with the right cleanup gear. Stock up on brush cleaner, rags, gloves, and storage containers. Don’t forget trash bags and buckets if you're working on a larger site.
Do you need fillers, caulks, or patching products?
Before painting or staining, fill in cracks, holes, and seams. Depending on your surface, you may need wood filler, spackle, or paintable caulk. We carry Sashco’s Exact Color, a tintable caulk you can match to your paint or stain—perfect for a seamless, professional finish.
